Vintage Necklaces and Pendants of the Edwardian Era When considering different types of vintage necklaces and pendants, one must consider the definition of the term “Vintage Jewelry”. The term “Vintage Jewelry” usually refers to any piece that is 25 years old or more.
In this article we will focus on necklaces and pendants from the Edwardian period of the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s since these are the most popular styles of vintage necklaces and pendants. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the most popular types of necklaces were “Lavaliere”, “Sautoir” or Rope, and “Choker” (which was called a “Dog Collar”). Both the Lavaliere and Sautoir types usually incorporated period pendants in their design. Lavaliere type necklaces consist of a fancy pendant which incorporates pearls into the design, or could be a single drop pearl. The pendant allows for a chain to either be strung through it or to be hooked to it.
Sautoir type necklaces were popularized in the 1920’s during the Edwardian era having been worn often by Queen Alexandria. A Sautoir type necklace is characterized by its exaggerated length. They are usually fall below the waist line (about forty inches long). Sautoir necklaces are most commonly made of beads or pearls, and would end in a pendant or tassel. Choker or Dog Collar necklaces wide tight fit necklaces which fit like a dog collar, hence the name. They are made from many different materials, but were often comprised of silver or platinum.
Dog Collars usually incorporate the delicate filigree designs that were typical of the period, and usually had a pendant in the middle of the necklace which would line up with the wearers chin. The pendants of this era were usually light and airy designs. Jewelers often made them from platinum, and incorporated diamonds, or cut glass to create intricate filigree designs.
